A bridal shower goes two to six weeks out. Not the month before.

Close enough to the wedding to feel like part of it, far enough that it is not competing with the last round of vendor calls. The window is wider than people think, and the day of the week matters more than the date does.

A bridal shower timeline, from engagement to wedding

Where the shower sits among the other wedding events.

01

The engagement party

Soon after the proposal, typically within the first few months. See the engagement party vs bridal shower page.

02

Registry ready

Before the shower invitations go out, so guests can shop for gifts.

03

Bridal shower invitations sent

Four to six weeks before the shower, or about eight weeks ahead for out of town guests.

04

The bridal shower

Two to six weeks before the wedding, on a weekend afternoon.

05

The bachelorette party

A month or more before the wedding, and a few weeks apart from the shower.

06

Rehearsal dinner and wedding day

The night before and the day itself, with the shower thank you notes already sent.

03

What decides the ideal bridal shower date

The traditional window is a guide. These factors move it earlier or later.

01

The bride's schedule

Pick a weekend she is free and not already overloaded with fittings, travel or work deadlines.

02

The host's availability

The maid of honor, a family member or a friend needs time to plan and host the celebration.

03

Out of town guests

If close family is traveling, hold the shower closer to the wedding or on the same trip, so guests travel once.

04

The registry

Guests need the registry to buy gifts, so the couple should set it up before the invitations go out.

05

The season and location

Avoid major holidays, school breaks and local events, and consider the weather for an outdoor venue.

06

Other celebrations

Keep the shower and the bachelorette party a few weeks apart when the guest list overlaps.

04

When do you have a bridal shower, and when do you plan it

The window, the day, the clashes, and what changes for a destination wedding.

The conventional answer is two to six weeks before the wedding, and it is right for a reason that has nothing to do with tradition. That window is close enough that the shower feels like part of the wedding and far enough that it is not competing with the final fittings, the seating chart and the last round of vendor decisions.

Two months out is early, three weeks is late

Earlier than about two months and the shower stops being connected to the wedding at all. It becomes a nice party in the spring for a wedding in the autumn, which is fine and is a different event from the one people picture.

Inside three weeks is the version that goes wrong. The bride is at her busiest, guests who are traveling to the wedding are already spending, and anything that has to be fixed afterwards, a broken gift, a thank you note, a returned item, is competing with the wedding week. The last three weeks belong to the wedding.

The day and the hour

A weekend afternoon. Sunday at one is the classic because it is the easiest block to book at a restaurant and the easiest for guests with children. Saturday late morning works and is more expensive at a venue, since Saturday is what every other event wants too.

Two hours is the shape, three is the outside edge. An afternoon shower means nobody has to organize dinner around it, which is why the evening version exists mostly for guest lists made of people who work on weekends.

When to start planning it

About eight weeks before the shower for the date and the venue, because private rooms and weekend slots can book up early. Invitations follow four to six weeks before the day, which is the timing that produces a headcount in time to order food.

The final two weeks are for the food order, the cake and the running order. Nothing with a lead time should be started in those two weeks, which is the rule that keeps the last week calm.

The dates to avoid

The wedding weekend itself and the week before it. The bachelorette party weekend, because two events in one month is a lot to ask of the same guest list and the same budgets. Long holiday weekends, when half the list is away. And the wedding of anybody who is in both circles, which is more common than it sounds.

Check the date against school holidays and any big local event before sending anything. A shower is a two hour party and it should not be the thing that makes a guest choose between two obligations.

A destination wedding moves everything earlier

If the wedding is abroad or across the country, the shower goes earlier, often two to three months out, because the guests who are traveling cannot absorb two trips close together and because many of them will not be at the shower at all.

The same logic applies when a lot of the guest list lives far away. A shower timed to a weekend when people are already in town, for another event or a holiday, will have more of the right people in the room than a perfectly placed date nobody can reach.

Two showers, and how far apart

A bride with family in two places often gets two showers, one from each side. Keep them at least a couple of weeks apart, give them different shapes, and make sure the two hosts have spoken to each other about the guest lists, the games and the dates.

The guest who is invited to both should feel invited rather than billed. One gift covers both, and the host who is second should say so plainly when she invites the overlap.

When to send bridal shower invitations

Send bridal shower invitations four to six weeks before the shower, and about eight weeks ahead if guests need to travel. Set the RSVP date about two weeks before the shower, so the host can confirm the catering, the venue and the seating. Include the date, time, location, host, registry details on an insert or the wedding website, and a casual note about the dress code if there is a theme.

The bridal shower invitations page covers the wording and design.

The best time of day for a bridal shower

Late morning brunch from about eleven, or an early afternoon lunch or tea from about one, are the classic times, and both leave the rest of the day free. An evening cocktail shower suits a couples shower or a guest list that works weekdays.

A surprise bridal shower

A surprise shower follows the same window, but coordinate the date with the partner or a family member who knows the bride's schedule, and send invitations with a clear note to keep it secret.

A virtual bridal shower

A virtual shower is easier to schedule because nobody travels. Hold it two to six weeks before the wedding, and ship gifts ahead so the bride can open them on camera. See the virtual bridal shower page.

Can you have a bridal shower after the wedding?

It is less traditional, but a post wedding celebration works for an elopement, a destination wedding or a short engagement. Call it a celebration or a couples party rather than a shower, and keep the gift expectations light, since guests may already have sent a wedding gift.

If the wedding date moves

Move the shower with it if the wedding moves by more than a month, and keep it if the shift is small. A shower that has drifted to four months before a wedding is not a problem, it is just an early party, and rescheduling eighteen people twice is worse than the drift.

If the wedding is postponed indefinitely, the honest answer is to hold the shower anyway if the couple wants it. The gifts are for the home rather than for the ceremony.

The last three weeks belong to the wedding. Everything else about the date is preference.

Bridal shower timing, answered

How far ahead, which day, and what to avoid.

When do you have a bridal shower?

Two to six weeks before the wedding, on a weekend afternoon.

Inside three weeks it competes with the wedding for the bride's attention and the guests' money.

What day and time is a bridal shower usually held?

Sunday at one in the afternoon is the classic, and Saturday late morning is the other one that works.

Two hours is the shape. An afternoon means nobody has to plan dinner around it.

How far in advance do you plan a bridal shower?

About eight weeks for the date and the venue, then invitations four to six weeks before the day.

The last two weeks are for the food order, the cake and the running order, and nothing with a lead time should start in them.

Can a bridal shower be the same weekend as the bachelorette party?

It can, and it is a lot to ask of one guest list. Two events in one month means two sets of travel and two budgets.

Keep them a few weeks apart: the shower two to six weeks before the wedding, and the bachelorette party one to three months before.

When is a bridal shower for a destination wedding?

Earlier, often two to three months out, because guests who are traveling cannot absorb two trips close together.

Timing it to a weekend when people are already in town beats a perfectly placed date nobody can reach.

How far apart should two showers be?

At least a couple of weeks, with different shapes and two hosts who have spoken to each other.

Anybody invited to both gives one gift, and the second host should say that plainly in the invitation.

What dates should we avoid?

The wedding weekend and the week before it, the bachelorette weekend, long holiday weekends, and any wedding in the same circles.

Check school holidays and big local events before sending anything.

Can you have a bridal shower a week before the wedding?

It is possible, especially when out of town family is already arriving, but it adds a busy event to the final week.

Two to six weeks before is the more relaxed window.

Is three months before the wedding too early for a bridal shower?

It is early but fine, especially for a long engagement or a busy wedding season.

Make sure the registry is ready first.

When should bridal shower invitations go out?

Four to six weeks before the shower, or about eight weeks for out of town guests.

Set the RSVP date about two weeks before the shower.

Can you have a bridal shower after the wedding?

Yes, as a post wedding celebration, for example after an elopement or destination wedding.

Keep gift expectations light.

Every cost on this page is a Revelwick editorial estimate for a bridal shower of about eighteen guests. It is a starting point for a budget conversation rather than a quote, and prices move, so check the current price before you book anything.

What is ours

The two to six week window is the published consensus. The reasoning for the near edge, that the last three weeks belong to the wedding, is ours.

The eight week planning start and the four to six week invitation timing are our recommendations, drawn from what actually has a lead time.
