What is a wedding shower? Two hours, and a table of gifts.

A party thrown for a couple before the wedding, at which the guests bring gifts for the home they are setting up. It runs about two hours, somebody other than the couple hosts it, and everybody invited to it is also invited to the wedding. Everything else about it is local custom.

02

Wedding shower vs bridal shower: the differences

The two names describe the same kind of party with a different guest list.

01

Who is celebrated

A bridal shower traditionally celebrates the bride. A wedding shower, often called a couples shower, celebrates both partners.

02

The guest list

A bridal shower is traditionally women close to the bride. A wedding shower invites friends and family of both people, men and women.

03

The host

Either is hosted by a friend, a relative or the wedding party rather than the couple themselves.

04

The activities

A bridal shower centers on the gift opening, a meal and a game or two. A wedding shower is more of a party: a barbecue, cocktails or a game night for a mixed crowd.

05

Can you have both?

Yes. Some couples have a bridal shower with close family and a separate couples shower with friends. Invite each guest to only one if gifts are expected at both.

03

Planning a wedding shower: a simple timeline

For the host, from the first conversation to the day itself.

01

Three to four months before the shower

Talk to the couple about the guest list, set the budget with any co-hosts, and choose a date two to six weeks before the wedding.

02

One to two months before

Book the venue or confirm the home, choose a theme, and plan the menu and one activity.

03

Four to six weeks before

Send the invitations with the registry details on an insert or the wedding website.

04

One to two weeks before

Confirm the headcount, order the food or cake, buy decorations and favors, and prepare the games.

05

The day of the shower

Set up early, ask a friend to note who gave which gift, and let the couple enjoy the celebration.

04

What is a wedding shower, and what happens at one

The definition, the two names, the running order, and the etiquette that is actually settled.

A wedding shower is a party held for a couple in the weeks before their wedding, at which the guests bring gifts, usually for the home the couple is setting up. It is hosted by somebody other than the couple, it lasts about two hours, and the center of it is a stretch where the gifts are opened in front of the room. It is not a bachelorette party, it is not the rehearsal dinner, and nobody dances.

Where the wedding shower tradition comes from

Wikipedia's summary of the custom says the bridal shower is said to have grown out of dowry practices: when a family could not afford a dowry, or a father refused one because he did not approve of the match, the bride's friends gathered to bring gifts so she could marry the person she chose. A frequently told story places the tradition in the Netherlands in the sixteenth or seventeenth century, and the custom took hold in the United States in the late nineteenth century.

The modern wedding shower keeps the spirit of that tradition: friends and family members come together to help the couple start married life, and to celebrate them before the wedding day.

Wedding shower or bridal shower, which is a question about the guest list

In most of the United States the two names describe the same event, and where they come apart it is the room that separates them. A bridal shower is the women of the guest list, seated, in the afternoon. A wedding shower is the version that includes the groom and his side, which makes it larger, partly standing and closer to a party than to a lunch.

That difference decides the venue, the food and the bill rather than the etiquette, and this site has a page comparing the two in detail. If you are reading the phrase on an invitation, read it as an instruction about who is coming.

Who hosts a wedding shower, and who pays for it

Traditionally somebody close to the couple rather than the couple themselves: the maid of honor, the wedding party together, a close friend, or an aunt. The modern version is looser, and a mother or a future mother-in-law hosting is entirely normal now, but the couple throwing their own remains the one thing nearly every etiquette source still advises against.

Whoever hosts, pays. Splitting it between two or three people is common and it is much easier if the number is agreed at the start rather than discovered afterwards, which is the whole subject of this site's page on who pays.

Who gets invited to a wedding shower

The one firm rule is that a shower guest must also be a wedding guest. Inviting somebody to a gift party and not to the wedding reads as a request for a present, and it is the only genuine etiquette breach available at this event.

Beyond that it is usually the bride's close friends and family and the wedding party, often around eighteen people. If the couple is having a wedding shower rather than a bridal shower, the guest list roughly doubles, which is the practical reason that version usually happens somewhere other than a living room.

When a wedding shower happens

Two to six weeks before the wedding is the comfortable window. Earlier than about two months and the couple is not yet in the middle of the wedding, which is fine but it loses the point of the timing. Inside the last three weeks it competes with the wedding itself for everybody's attention and money.

A destination wedding pulls it earlier, because the guests are already paying for one trip. If the couple lives far from where they grew up, two smaller showers a few weeks apart are normal, and the two hosts should talk to each other so the same guests do not sit through the same afternoon twice.

What actually happens, in order

Guests arrive over about half an hour and are given a drink and something to eat. Food is usually a spread rather than a plated meal, because eighteen people serving themselves is the format that works. Somewhere in the middle, the couple opens the gifts in front of the room, which takes about forty-five minutes at that guest count and is the part the invitation is really for.

There is often one game, and one is enough. Cake or dessert comes near the end, the couple thanks everybody, and people leave inside two hours. Nothing about the afternoon needs to be more complicated than that, and the showers that go wrong are usually the ones with a schedule rather than a shape.

Games, activities and what else a wedding shower includes

Most showers have one game, played from a seat, and eighteen people can be through it in ten minutes. Bingo during the gift opening is the version that does a job, because it gives the room something to do while the couple unwraps. Two games is plenty and six is the usual reason guests remember an afternoon as long.

Beyond that the extras are a cake, sometimes a small favor for each guest, and occasionally a station: advice cards, a recipe box, or a flower bar where every guest builds a bouquet to take home. None of it is required, and a shower with good food and no activities at all is a perfectly normal wedding shower.

The invitations, and what to wear

Invitations go out four to six weeks ahead and carry five facts: who the shower is for, who is hosting, where, the start and end time, and how to reply. Family members who live far away are usually invited even when everybody knows they cannot come, because the invitation is how the couple's side of the family is included.

For guests, the dress code is whatever the venue implies: a living room is casual, a restaurant is a step up, a garden adds grass and wind. The one convention is that the bride's guests avoid white, and this site has a page on what to wear to each kind of room.

What guests bring to a wedding shower

A gift, usually from the couple's registry is fifty to seventy-five dollars. A shower gift does not replace the wedding gift, so both belong in the budget from the start.

A card comes with it, and it is worth writing two sentences rather than one, because the cards are usually read out loud while the gifts are opened. The amount tracks how close you are to the couple rather than how expensive the shower looks.

A wedding shower is not a bachelorette party

Different event, different guest list, different money. The shower is an afternoon with family in the room and gifts at the center, paid for by the host. The bachelorette party is a night or a weekend with the friends, paid for by the guests, and nobody brings a gift to it.

A couple having both is normal and they should be a few weeks apart. If only one is going to happen, the shower is the one that includes the people who cannot travel, which is usually the argument that decides it.

What is the purpose of a bridal shower?

A bridal shower has two purposes. The practical one is the oldest: friends and family help the couple set up a home with gifts, which is where the word shower comes from, the idea of showering the bride with presents. The social one matters just as much now. It gathers the women in the bride's life, often from different parts of it, in one room before the wedding, so her college roommate meets her aunt before the reception.

That is also the answer to what a bridal shower is in one sentence: a daytime party, hosted by a friend or relative a few weeks before the wedding, where guests bring gifts and celebrate the bride.

Do men go to bridal showers?

Traditionally no, since a bridal shower was a party for women. Now it depends on the kind of shower. A couples shower or a wedding shower invites men and women, and the groom attends. At a traditional bridal shower the groom sometimes arrives at the end to thank the guests and help carry the gifts to the car.

The invitation settles it. If it names a couple or says wedding shower, partners are welcome. If it is addressed to one guest, it is for that guest.

Bridal shower etiquette, in short

Invite only people who are also invited to the wedding. Let somebody other than the couple host. Send invitations four to six weeks ahead, with the registry on an insert or the wedding website rather than in the card. Open the gifts at the shower if the bride is comfortable, with a friend writing down who gave what, and send thank you notes within about two weeks.

Beyond those rules, bridal shower etiquette comes down to one question: would the bride want this person, this game or this gift in the room? If the answer is yes, it belongs.

Creative wedding shower ideas

A wedding shower does not have to be a living room and a stack of presents. Couples and hosts plan a backyard barbecue, a wine or cocktail tasting, a movie night, a brunch at a coffee shop, or a themed party like stock the bar or a travel shower. The bridal shower ideas and couples wedding shower games pages have more options for planning a celebration that feels unique to the couple.

Do you have to have a wedding shower at all

No. It is a custom rather than an obligation, and plenty of couples skip it, particularly when they have lived together for years and need nothing for the house. Nobody is owed a shower and nobody is owed a gift.

If the couple would rather not open gifts in front of a room, the version that keeps the afternoon and drops the awkward part is simple: the invitation says gifts will go on a table and be opened later. That is widely accepted.

Anybody invited to the shower has to be invited to the wedding. That is the only real rule in the whole event.

05

The two hours of a wedding shower, in order

About eighteen guests. The times are what the afternoon actually takes rather than what a schedule says.

01

Arrival, thirty minutes

Guests turn up across half an hour, get a drink and something to eat, and find a seat. This is where a card to write or a first game belongs, because the room is not yet a room.

02

Food, thirty minutes

A spread that people serve themselves, kept to things that are fine at room temperature. A plated meal turns a shower into a lunch and needs seating for everybody at the same moment.

03

Gifts, forty-five minutes

The part the invitation is for. Somebody sits beside the couple writing down who gave what, which is the single most useful job at the whole event and the one that makes the thank you notes possible.

04

Cake and goodbyes, fifteen minutes

Dessert, a short thank you from the couple, and the afternoon ends while people still want to be there. Two hours is the shape, and three is the outside edge.

Wedding showers, answered

The definition questions, in the order people ask them.

What is a wedding shower?

A party held for a couple before the wedding, at which guests bring gifts for the home they are setting up.

It runs about two hours, somebody other than the couple hosts it, and the gifts are usually opened in front of the room.

Is a wedding shower the same as a bridal shower?

In most of the country, yes. Where the names come apart, the difference is the guest list: a bridal shower is the women, seated, and a wedding shower includes the groom and his side.

That makes the wedding shower larger, partly standing and more expensive per head to host.

Who hosts a wedding shower?

Somebody close to the couple: the maid of honor, the wedding party, a friend or a relative. A mother hosting is normal now.

The couple hosting their own is the one thing nearly every etiquette source still advises against.

Often one game, and one is enough. Nobody dances and nothing is scheduled to the minute.

The shower gift does not replace the wedding gift, and the amount tracks how close you are rather than how the shower looks.

Is a wedding shower the same as a bachelorette party?

No. The shower is an afternoon with family in the room, gifts at the center, and the host paying.

The bachelorette party is a night or a weekend with the friends, paid for by the guests, with no gifts at all.

Do we have to have one?

To help the couple set up a home with gifts, and to gather the women in the bride's life in one room before the wedding.

The word shower comes from showering the bride with presents.

Do men go to bridal showers?

The history of the custom is as summarized in Wikipedia's article on the bridal shower, which itself notes that the origin stories are traditions rather than documented history.

What is ours

The two hour shape and the block timings are our recommendation, drawn from what the format actually has to fit: arrival, a spread, gift opening at eighteen guests, and an ending before people are ready to leave.

The rule that shower guests must be wedding guests is standard etiquette rather than our position. We do not name shops or brands.
