08

Planning a San Antonio bachelorette weekend: the rules, the calendar and getting around

What to know before booking.

A San Antonio bachelorette party is a hotel on the River Walk or at Pearl, a rooftop bar, dueling pianos at Howl at the Moon, a river cruise, brunch at Pearl and a workshop or winery day. Book the rooftops and dinners ahead, and buy liquor before stores close at 9 p.m.

Drinks and the law

The drinking age is 21. San Antonio bans open containers and public drinking in the downtown central business district, so drinks stay on the bar or restaurant premises, and River Walk businesses cannot let patrons queue on the walkway. Passengers in a hired party bus or limo may have open drinks under Texas law.

When to go

NOAA normals at the airport give highs of about 74 degrees in March, 80 in April and 82 in October, and 90 or more from June to September. Fiesta runs April 15 to 25, 2027, the Stock Show and Rodeo February 11 to 28, 2027, and the Holiday River Parade the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Getting around

Visit San Antonio says downtown is very walkable, with nightlife clustered around the River Walk and Houston Street. VIA buses are $1.30 and a day pass is $2.75, a taxi downtown from the airport starts at $24 to $29, and Go Rio's river shuttles connect downtown with Pearl.

Liquor before nine, drinks on the patio, and the river to get to Pearl.

2am

Last call at bars with a late hours certificate

San Antonio bars can serve until 2 a.m. every night, but liquor stores close at 9 p.m.

Texas lets bars in cities of 800,000 or more serve until 2 a.m. with a late hours certificate, and several River Walk bars post 2 a.m. closing. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission gives package store hours as 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday, so buy liquor before 9.
