Planning the celebration: the rules, the calendar and the money

What to know before you plan.

A Houston bachelorette party is a celebration for the bride and her guests: a rooftop at sunset, a jazz brunch, a creative workshop and a spa day, at about $1,010 a head for two nights as a Revelwick estimate. The planning is about a hotel rather than a party house, one neighborhood for the night and the heat.

Drinks and the law

The drinking age is 21. Bars with a late hours permit can serve until 2 a.m., and without one the cutoff is midnight, or 1 a.m. early on Sunday. Liquor stores are closed on Sunday and open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. the rest of the week. In downtown's central business district, open containers and public drinking are banned outside licensed premises.

When to go

NOAA normals at Bush Airport give highs of about 74 degrees in March, 80 in April and 73 in November, and about 95 in August. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10.

Getting around

METRO's 500 IAH Downtown Direct bus runs from Terminal E to the George R. Brown Convention Center for $4.50, every 30 minutes from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Hobby Airport has its own Downtown Direct route. Ride apps pick up at marked zones at each terminal.

Where the money goes

Food and drink is the largest line at about $343 a head, then rooms at about $283, getting there at about $202 and the night out at about $182.

A hotel rather than a party house, one neighborhood for the night, and dinner booked first.
