Plan

Planning a Folly Beach bachelorette weekend: the rules and the weather

What to know before booking.

A Folly Beach bachelorette party is a beach house or the Tides, a beach day, a surf lesson or party boat, live music on Center Street and brunch by the pier. The public beach is dry, so plan drinks at the bars and on a BYOB boat.

Drinks and the law

The drinking age is 21. The city bans alcohol and glass on the sand, and county parks ban alcohol too. Bars can serve until 2 a.m. State law bans open containers in vehicles, and the sections read contain no exception for party buses or limos. A captained boat carrying more than six passengers needs a Coast Guard inspection.

Beach and parking rules

Pay stations take no coins, and there is no parking in paid lots after 10 p.m. and no overnight parking. Dogs are off the beach 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May through September. Golf carts cannot drive along Center Street or at night.

When to go

NOAA normals for Charleston give highs of about 79 degrees in May, 87 in July and 76 in October, with the most rain from June to September. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Charleston International is 20.3 miles away by the airport's taxi table.

Nothing to drink on the sand, a card for parking, and a BYOB cruise for the bride.

The Folly ruleBefore booking

Drinks allowed on the public beach

No alcohol and no glass on the sand, so drink at the oceanfront bar instead.

The City of Folly Beach bans possession or consumption of alcohol on the beach, along with glass, plastic, balloons, styrofoam, fires and smoking. State liquor stores close at 7 p.m. and all day Sunday, so shop on the way in.
