09

Planning a San Juan bachelorette trip: travel, the rules and the weather

What to know before booking flights.

A San Juan bachelorette party is a Caribbean trip without a passport for US citizens: a hotel in Condado or Old San Juan, cocktails and salsa, a food tour, a catamaran or rainforest day and a night at La Placita. Plan around hurricane season and check each venue's age rule.

Drinks and the law

Puerto Rico sets the drinking age at 18, but La Factoría is 23 and over and Fifty Eight is 21 and over, so check before inviting younger guests. Open containers are banned in cars, with a $200 fine; passengers in buses and limousines for hire are exempt.

When to go

NOAA normals at the airport give highs between 83 and 89 degrees all year. February and March are the driest months, and November is the wettest. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the peak around September 10.

Getting around

SJU is in Isla Verde. Discover Puerto Rico puts Condado about 10 minutes from the airport and Old San Juan about 15. The airport names Uber and Lyft for rideshare, and D53 and T5 buses leave from the departures level. Take a taxi or rideshare to La Placita, and a tour or driver to El Yunque and Fajardo.

A REAL ID for everyone, the age rules checked, and a date outside the storm peak.

Passports needed from the US

US citizens do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico. Everyone still needs ID to fly.

USAGov lists Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands as territories US citizens can travel to without a passport. TSA began REAL ID enforcement on May 7, 2025, so each guest needs a REAL ID compliant license or a passport to board the flight.
