White bachelorette dress styles
The white party dresses brides choose for a bachelorette weekend, and what each suits.
A white sequin mini dress
The classic night out look for a bachelorette party: a sequin or beaded mini that catches the light for dancing and photos.
A lace mini dress
Romantic and bridal, and lace over a lining photographs well under flash.
A feather trim dress
Feathers at the hem or the cuffs for a fun, dramatic statement at a disco or glam party.
A corset or bustier dress
A structured bodice that looks polished and stays in place all night.
An off the shoulder or one shoulder dress
A flattering neckline for a dinner and drinks.
A satin slip or midi dress
Elegant for a long dinner. Choose a heavy satin and test it under flash.
A white set or two piece
A matching top and skirt, or a corset top with white trousers, which can be worn separately later.
A white jumpsuit or romper
Easy to move and dance in, and a chic alternative to a dress.

The flash test for a white bachelorette dress
Four weeks out, so anything that fails can still go back.
Put it on in a dark room
Lights off or low, which is the actual lighting condition of the evening it is for. A dressing room with overhead lighting tells you nothing about how it behaves at eleven at night.
Photograph it with direct flash
Somebody else, a phone, flash on, from about six feet. Direct flash passes through thin fabric in a way ambient light does not, and this is the single condition that catches people out.
Look at the photograph, not the mirror
The mirror is not what nine people will be holding. If the photograph shows more than you want it to, the dress is not the problem and neither are you: it is thin unlined white doing what thin unlined white does.
Sit down in it
An outfit that rides up in a chair will ride up in a booth for hours, so sit in it for twenty minutes.
Then decide, four weeks out
Early enough to return it and order something else. A dress bought two weeks before the trip is a dress that gets worn whatever the flash test said, which is how this fails.
06
Which white bachelorette dress shapes pass the flash test
Two checks for each style: is it lined at the front, and does the fabric have some weight.
| Shape | Under direct flash | Buy it if |
|---|---|---|
| A lined mini | A safe choice. A front lining is the difference between a mini that works under flash and one that does not | The listing says lined, not "partially lined" |
| Lace over a lining | Photographs beautifully and is the least sheer option here, because the lace breaks the light before it reaches the lining | You want the dress to read as bridal without a veil |
| Satin, in a slip shape | The riskiest. A heavy sheen throws the flash straight back and shows every line under it, and thin satin is the classic failure | It is a heavy satin and you have photographed it |
| Thin white jersey | The version that fails. It is comfortable, it is cheap, and it is the fabric that fails first in a white dress | Never, for the evening. It is fine for the daytime |
| A structured white midi | Passes on the flash and passes on the chair, which no other shape here does both of | The bachelorette party has a dinner in it rather than only a bar |
| Off-white or ivory, any shape | Reads as white in photos and is kinder under the warm light of a bar | You would have bought optic white. Buy this instead |
Lined at the front, and a fabric you can feel the weight of.

Minutes, and do it at home
Direct flash passes through thin white fabric in a way ambient light does not. A dressing room tells you nothing.
Direct flash passes through thin fabric in a way that a dressing room mirror does not show. Lights low, dress on, somebody photographs you with the flash on from a few feet away, and you look at the photo. Do it four weeks before the trip, while there is still time to return the dress.

How to choose a white bachelorette dress
Fabric, fit, length, the rest of the weekend, the group's colors and the budget.
A white bachelorette dress is a fun tradition: the bride in white, the group in one other color, and the bride easy to spot in every photo without a sash. The best white party dress fits her style, suits the destination and passes two quick checks at home, the flash test and the seated test.
Fabric and lining
Choose a dress lined at the front, not only through the bust, in a fabric with some weight: lace over a lining, sequins, beading, crepe or a heavy satin. Thin unlined white jersey is comfortable but turns sheer in flash photos. Cream, ivory or off white reads as white in pictures and is more forgiving.
Length and fit
A mini dress suits dancing and a club night; a midi dress suits a dinner or a winery. Sit down in the dress and check that it stays in place, and choose a length the bride will be comfortable in all evening.
Outfits for the whole weekend
White is hard to keep clean at a bar, so plan the white dress for one night and add other white pieces for the rest of the bachelorette weekend: a white top with jeans for arrival, a white swimsuit or cover up for the pool, and a white set for brunch. The bachelorette party outfits page covers the full packing list.
White party dresses for each bachelorette party event
Planning the bride's outfits event by event keeps the bachelorette party wardrobe simple. For the welcome dinner, a little white dress or a white set. For the big night out, the statement party dress in sequins, feathers or lace. For a pool or boat day, a white swimsuit and cover up. For brunch on the last morning, a casual white sundress. Pair each look with the same shoes and accessories to pack light.
The bridal wardrobe of the wedding year
Brides who love wearing white can plan a few white outfits across the wedding year: the engagement party, the bridal shower, the bachelorette party, the rehearsal dinner and the honeymoon. Choosing white dresses in different styles for each celebration, a garden dress for the shower and a party dress for the bachelorette, keeps every event special and saves the most bridal look for the wedding day.
What the rest of the group wears
The girls wear one other color, often black because most people already own a black dress, or a color from the theme. Ask for a color rather than a specific shade, so nobody has to shop.
Accessories
A veil clip, a pearl headband, a bride hat or statement earrings mark the bride without a sash. Bring a white or clear bag and comfortable shoes for a long night.
What a white bachelorette dress should cost
A dress for one night is a good place to spend less: rent, borrow, or choose a dress she will wear again to a rehearsal dinner or on the honeymoon. For the other white dress of the wedding year, see the bridal shower dress page.
If the bride would rather not wear white
Ask her privately. A bride who does not want to stand out can wear the group color with a small bridal accessory instead, and the bachelorette party still celebrates her.
Flash on, lights low, look at the photo. Two minutes before the trip.

White bachelorette dresses, answered
The questions brides and maids of honor ask before buying.
Should the bride wear white to her bachelorette party?
It is a fun tradition that makes her easy to spot in photos, but it is her choice.
The group wears one other color.
What kind of white dress should I wear to my bachelorette?
A lined sequin, lace or corset mini for a night out, or a satin or crepe midi for a dinner.
Match it to the destination and your style.
How do I make sure a white dress is not see through?
Photograph it with flash in a dark room before the trip.
Choose a dress lined at the front.
Can the bride wear the white dress more than one night?
It is best kept for one night out, since white marks easily.
Plan other white pieces for the rest of the weekend.
What should the bridesmaids wear to the bachelorette party?
One other color, such as black or a theme color.
Avoid white.
What white dress works for a Nashville bachelorette?
A white fringe or denim dress with a white cowgirl hat and boots.
Comfortable boots for Broadway.
What should I wear if I do not want a dress?
A white jumpsuit, romper or matching set.
Add a veil clip or earrings.
Should I buy a new white dress for my bachelorette?
Only if you will wear it again. Renting or borrowing works well for one night.
Test it at home first.
How many white outfits does a bride need for a bachelorette weekend?
Plan three or four looks: a little white dress for dinner, a statement party dress, a swimsuit or cover up, and a casual outfit for brunch.
Reuse shoes and accessories.

What to read next
The same convention in the water, what everybody else wears, and the packing version of all of it.
10
Where this comes from
The convention's standing is editorial judgment. The flash test is ours.
What this page is
Revelwick's editorial advice for a bachelorette party of about nine. Nobody paid to be mentioned on it, and no dress on this page is a product recommendation.
What is ours
The flash test is our recommendation. It follows from how direct flash behaves with thin fabric rather than from anything a retailer discloses, and it is the evening counterpart to the wet test on the white swimwear page.
The preference for cream or ivory over optic white is ours as well, for the same reasons plus how each behaves under warm bar lighting.
What we do not do
We do not sell dresses, recommend retailers or link to products. What decides whether a dress works here is a test you run at home, not a brand.
There is no affiliate arrangement behind anything on this page.
