The bridal shower dress, in four lines
The rules before the outfit ideas.
- The one rule
- Guests, not whiteNo white, ivory or cream on a guest. It is the one firm convention at a bridal shower
- The bride
- White or lightBy tradition, and hers to break. A light blue, blush or bold color works too
- The dress code
- Dressy casualUnless the invitation says otherwise. The venue sets the level
- The test
- Sit in itTwo hours mostly seated, with the gift opening in the middle
02
The bride and a guest at a bridal shower, side by side
Read down the first column. Only one row is a rule and it is the color row.
| The bride | A guest | |
|---|---|---|
| Color | White or light, by convention. Hers to depart from | Anything except white, ivory or cream |
| How dressed up | One step above the room | An outfit at the level of the room, not above it |
| Who decides formality | The venue, which she may have chosen | The venue, so ask if the invitation does not say |
| What she will be doing | Opening gifts in front of everybody, seated | Sitting, eating, standing for photographs |
| Sleeves and neckline | Matter more than usual, because of the gift opening | Ordinary considerations apply |
| Budget | Worth spending on if it will be worn again | Not worth buying for at all if something works |
| Photographed | Constantly, from the front, close | In groups, mostly standing |
| The failure | A dress chosen standing at a mirror | White, and then anything that rides up |
The rows that produce actual problems are the last two. A bridal shower dress that was fine in a mirror and one that rides up when seated are the two failures worth planning around, and both are avoidable by sitting down in the dress for an hour before the day.
03
The bridal shower dress code, by venue
The venue sets the level, so ask where the shower is if the invitation does not say.
A home or backyard: casual
A casual midi dress, a sundress, or dressy separates with flats. Comfortable, polished and easy to sit in.
A brunch or restaurant: dressy casual
A midi dress, a wrap dress or a chic jumpsuit, with shoes you would wear to dinner.
A garden party: dressy casual, outdoors
A floral midi or a flowy maxi, block heels or flats for grass, and a layer for the breeze.
A tea room, hotel or country club: semi-formal
An elegant midi dress in satin, crepe or lace, with a heel and simple jewelry.
A themed shower
Follow the theme lightly: a color in the palette, a floral for a garden party, something blue for a something blue shower. Never buy an outfit just for the theme.

Bridal shower outfit ideas for the bride
By style, so the bride can pick the look that feels like her.
Classic
A white satin midi dress or a structured white A-line dress with pearl earrings. Elegant, timeless and easy to photograph.
Romantic
A white lace dress, a floral appliqué or a soft ruffle, with a feminine silhouette and delicate jewelry.
Modern minimalist
A clean white column midi, a one shoulder dress or a tailored white jumpsuit with a sleek bag.
Boho
A flowy white maxi with eyelet or crochet details, sandals and a floral crown or loose waves.
Trendy
A drop waist dress, a bow detail, a white mini with a statement sleeve, or a colored dress in pale blue or blush.
A second look
Some brides change into a second outfit for photos or a dinner after the shower, which is a fun excuse to try another style.

Bridal shower outfit ideas for guests and bridesmaids
Stylish, comfortable and never white.
A floral midi dress
A classic shower guest outfit for spring and summer, and a floral print is forgiving if something spills.
A wrap dress
Flattering and easy, as long as it stays closed when you lean forward.
A pastel or jewel tone dress
Blue, blush, sage or lavender for spring; emerald, burgundy or navy for fall and winter.
A satin slip dress with a cardigan
Chic and modern, dressed up with heels or down with sandals.
A jumpsuit
A comfortable alternative to a dress for a casual or dressy casual shower.
Dressy separates
A silk blouse with tailored trousers or a midi skirt, the most versatile outfit for a home shower.
Bridesmaids
Bridesmaids do not need to match at the shower. Coordinating in soft colors looks nice in photos if the group wants to.
06
Which bridal shower dress shapes pass the seated test
Reasoning from how a garment behaves in a chair, not a survey. Plan around riding up first.
| Shape | After ninety minutes in a chair | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|
| A midi with a defined waist | A reliable choice. The waist stays where it was put and the skirt does not travel | Anywhere, and the default answer for the bride |
| Fit and flare | Passes, because the skirt of the dress has somewhere to go when you sit down | A living room or a garden |
| A wrap dress | Depends entirely on how the dress ties. A wrap that gaps when you lean forward will gap for two hours, and the gift opening is all leaning forward | A restaurant or a brunch, if you have sat in it first |
| A sheath, or anything closely fitted | The shape to test first: it can ride up, and the afternoon becomes a series of small adjustments in front of a camera | Standing events, which a bridal shower is not |
| A jumpsuit | Comfortable where a dress creases at the hip. Think about the bathroom at a two hour event | Casual showers, and a practical choice for the bride |
| A maxi | Passes seated. The one dress here that catches on chair legs standing, and on grass it collects the garden | Restaurants and tea rooms rather than a backyard |
| Separates, tailored | Forgiving, because a top that rides up is solved by a waistband rather than by standing up | A living room or a casual brunch |
Sit down in the dress for an hour at home, in the shoes, before the day. Anything fine in a mirror and not fine in a chair shows up in that hour.
07
Bridal shower dresses by season
Judgment rather than data, mostly about sleeves, fabric and shoes.
| What works | What to avoid | |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | A floral midi dress, or a pastel midi with a sleeve. Flats if any part of it is outdoors | Strapless without a layer. Indoor rooms can be colder than the invitation implies |
| Summer | Cotton, or linen if you have accepted the creases. A flat sandal, because grass takes a heel | Heavy fabric, and heels at any outdoor bridal shower |
| Fall | A jewel tone, which photographs well, and a midi dress with a sleeve | A summer dress with a cardigan over it. It reads as an afterthought in every photograph |
| Winter | A long sleeved dress, a heavier crepe, and a boot if the bridal shower is not in a restaurant | Anything that needs the coat kept on, because then the coat is the outfit |
Dress for the room temperature, not the season on the invitation.

How to choose a bridal shower dress
The color rule, the seated test, fabric, accessories, what not to wear and what to spend.
A bridal shower dress, for the bride or a guest, is chosen by three things: the dress code the venue sets, the one color rule, and whether the outfit is comfortable for two hours mostly seated. Once those are settled, the style is yours: classic, romantic, modern, boho or simply your favorite dress.
The color rule, and the colors that work
Guests avoid white, ivory and cream, which belong to the bride. Every other color is fine. Pastels and soft tones such as light blue and blush suit a spring or daytime shower, jewel tones suit fall and winter, and a floral print works in any season. Black is acceptable at a daytime shower, especially with a lighter accessory. If the host has announced a color palette, wear something in that family if you own it.
What the bride wears to her bridal shower
The tradition is white or something light, so the bride stands out in photos with her guests. It is a convention rather than a rule, and a bride who loves color can wear it. Because she opens gifts seated and leaning forward in front of everyone, a sleeve or strap that stays put and a neckline that works when she leans matter more for her than for anyone else.
The seated test
Sit down in the dress for an hour at home, in the shoes you plan to wear, then stand up and look. A dress that rides up, gaps or creases in that hour will do the same at the shower. It is the most useful check before the day.
Fabric
Linen and crisp cotton crease where they fold, so they look best early in the day. Crepe, jersey, soft satin and printed chiffon hold up better through a seated afternoon. Satin shows every crease under a camera flash, and lace on a guest is lovely in a color but reads as bridal in white or ivory.
Shoes and accessories
Block heels, wedges or dressy flats for grass and long periods of standing; heels for a restaurant or tea room. Add simple earrings, a small bag, and a light layer such as a cardigan, a denim jacket or a shawl for an air conditioned room or an outdoor breeze. The bride can add pearl earrings, a bow or a veil clip for photos.
What not to wear to a bridal shower
White, ivory or cream as a guest. After that, avoid anything too formal for the room, such as a floor length gown in a living room, anything you cannot sit in comfortably, heels that sink into grass at a garden shower, and anything that needs a coat kept on. Denim and clean sneakers can work at a casual backyard shower if the host has said the dress code is casual.
Can you wear a wedding guest dress?
Yes. A daytime wedding guest dress in the right season is usually the right level for a restaurant or tea room shower, and it saves buying something new. If you want an outfit for the shower itself, ask whether you would wear it again, and buy for that.
Buying online
Order about three weeks before the shower so an exchange is possible, and if you are between sizes and returns are free, order both and send one back. See what to wear to a bridal shower for more guest outfit advice.
Not white, right for the room, and comfortable seated. Then the style is yours.

Hours, mostly in a chair
A bridal shower dress chosen standing at a mirror is the one that fails. Sit in it first.
A bridal shower is about two hours, mostly seated, photographed from the front, with a long stretch of gift opening. Anything that rides up will ride up for two hours, a fabric that creases will be creased by the second hour, and a neckline that works standing is a different proposition leaning forward to take a present.

Bridal shower dresses, answered
The questions brides and guests ask before choosing an outfit.
What should you wear to a bridal shower as a guest?
A dressy casual outfit such as a floral midi dress, a wrap dress, a jumpsuit or dressy separates, in any color except white, ivory or cream.
Match the level of the venue.
What does the bride wear to her bridal shower?
Traditionally white or something light, such as a white midi, a lace dress or a white jumpsuit.
A color the bride loves is fine too.
Can guests wear white to a bridal shower?
No. White, ivory and cream belong to the bride.
A white floral with a strong color print is a gray area, so ask the host.
What is the dress code for a bridal shower?
Dressy casual unless the invitation says otherwise.
Casual at home, semi-formal at a tea room or hotel.
Can you wear black to a bridal shower?
Yes, especially with a lighter accessory at a daytime shower.
Avoid it if the host has asked for a color palette.
Can you wear jeans to a bridal shower?
At a casual backyard shower if the host has said it is casual, dressed up with a nice top.
Choose a dress or dressy separates otherwise.
What colors are best for a bridal shower dress?
Pastels such as light blue and blush for spring and summer, jewel tones for fall and winter, and florals any time.
Anything except white, ivory or cream for guests.
What shoes should you wear to a bridal shower?
Block heels, wedges or dressy flats for a garden or home, heels for a restaurant or tea room.
Avoid thin heels on grass.
Should bridesmaids match at the bridal shower?
No. Coordinating colors are optional.
Save matching for the wedding.
What should the mother of the bride wear to the shower?
A dressy casual dress or separates at the same level as the room, coordinated with the mother of the groom rather than the bride.
Not white.

One color in detail, the event itself, and the other event with completely different rules.

Where this comes from
The rule is standard etiquette and the advice about fit is editorial judgment. The seated test is ours.
What this page is
Revelwick's editorial advice for a bridal shower of about eighteen guests. Nobody paid to be mentioned on it.
What is ours
The seated test is our recommendation and it follows from the format of the event rather than from anything about clothes: two hours in a chair, photographed from the front, with gift opening in the middle.
So is the position that the venue rather than the season sets the formality, and the argument that a dress bought for one event is the same kind of purchase this site argues against everywhere else.
