30

Nights, the shortest legal rental in unincorporated Napa County

A vineyard house for the weekend is not legal in rural Napa, so stay in a hotel or in the city.

Napa County has banned advertising and renting dwellings for stays under 30 consecutive days in its unincorporated area since 2010. Napa County code also limits winery tours and tastings to guests with prior appointments. In Sonoma County, a permitted vacation rental holds two people per bedroom plus two, up to 12, with quiet hours from 10 p.m. and no outdoor amplified sound.

Planning a Bay Area bachelorette party

Drinks, getting around, weather and events.

Bay Area bachelorette party ideas split between San Francisco, with rooftops, drag brunch and the Mission, and Napa and Sonoma wine country 40 to 50 miles north. Pick one base and treat the other as a day trip.

Drinks and the law

The drinking age is 21 and California bars stop selling at 2 a.m. Open containers are banned in a private car, but not for passengers in a licensed bus, taxi or limousine for hire. If anyone under 21 is on a charter, the group must say whether alcohol is coming, or the trip can end without a refund. San Francisco bans drinking on sidewalks and in parks such as Mission Dolores.

Getting around

Visit Napa Valley puts downtown Napa 50 miles from San Francisco, one to two hours by car, and Visit Sonoma Valley puts Sonoma about 45 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge plus rush hour. The ferry to Vallejo takes about an hour, and Caltrain runs from San Jose in 47 to 67 minutes.

When to go

NOAA normals give San Francisco its warmest month in September, around 70 degrees, while Napa reaches 84 in September and Healdsburg 89 in July. Big dates: Fleet Week October 4 to 12, 2026, Bay to Breakers May 16, BottleRock May 28 to 30, Pride June 26 to 27 and Outside Lands August 6 to 8, 2027.

One base, tastings booked ahead, and a licensed driver between the two.
