Why bridal shower thank you notes are hard, and it is not the words
Three problems, and only one of them is about what to write.
What makes thank-you notes difficult is not running out of things to say. It is forgetting who gave the salad bowl, writing four notes and leaving the rest for two weeks, and the whole job arriving in the same three weeks as the seating plan. Those are three separate problems and the wording is not one of them.
The bridal shower gift list is the whole thing
Somebody has to write down who gave what as each gift is opened, on paper, at the shower. This is a job that takes one person about twenty minutes of light attention and it is the single reason these notes take ninety minutes rather than an evening spread over three weekends.
Without it the bride is reconstructing eighteen gifts from photographs and memory, will get three or four wrong, and will find out about one of them at the wedding. If the shower has already happened and nobody kept a list, ask the host and two guests separately and reconcile the three versions. Photos from the day can help fill the gaps.
Write the bridal shower notes all in one sitting
Writing all eighteen in one block keeps the list, the wording and the stamps in one place, so you do not have to work out where you left off.
Put the stack, the pen, the stamps and the list on one table. Address every envelope first, then write.
Four sentences per bridal shower note, two of which change
Every good thank you note is the same four sentences: thank them for the specific gift, say what you will actually do with it, say something about them being there, and close. The first two sentences change for each guest. The last two barely change at all, and it is entirely fine that they do not.
This is what makes the task finite. You are not writing eighteen letters. You are writing eighteen pairs of sentences inside a shape you settled once, and the shape is doing the work of sounding warm.
Say what you will do with it, not that you love it
The difference between a note that reads as genuine and one that reads as duty is a single detail about use. The bowl is going on the table at Christmas. The blender means the smoothie phase is now unavoidable. The gift card is going toward the pan that is not on the registry.
That one clause is more convincing than any amount of enthusiasm, and it is easier to write than a sentence about how thoughtful somebody is. It also solves the awkward case, because you can be specific about a gift you are lukewarm on without saying anything untrue.
More bridal shower thank you note examples
For a special or sentimental gift: "Thank you for the photo album of the two of us. I have already filled the first pages, and it will be the thing I show people for the rest of my life. Thank you for coming, and I cannot wait to see you at the wedding." For a guest who traveled: "Thank you for the beautiful serving bowl, and even more for coming all that way. It meant a great deal to have you there."
For a thoughtful gift from somebody you know well: "Thank you for the recipe box, and for filling the first cards yourself. I am so grateful, and I will think of you every time I cook from it." Every one of these messages expresses gratitude the same way: name the gift, say one true thing about it, and point to the wedding or the next time you will see each other.
One idea that makes a note more meaningful for almost no effort: tuck in a photo from the shower of the guest and the bride together. It takes one print order, it turns a card into something people keep, and it shows you appreciate them being there as much as the gift.
Who gets a bridal shower thank you note
Everybody who came, and everybody who sent a gift without coming. That includes guests who arrived without a gift, and their note is about them being there rather than about an object, which is a perfectly good note and often the warmest one in the stack.
It also includes the host. The person who paid for and ran the shower is frequently the only guest who does not get thanked in writing, because she is not on the gift list, and it is the most common omission.
Bridal shower group gifts, cash and gift cards
A group gift gets a separate note to each person in the group, not one note to the group. Name the gift in all of them and vary the second sentence. Six identical notes are worse than six short ones.
For money, name the amount only if it feels natural to you, and name the purpose instead if it does not. The convention that you never mention a figure is softer than it used to be, but saying what it is going toward always works and never reads as awkward.
Handwritten bridal shower notes, and what that actually requires
Handwritten on a card, posted. This is one of the few pieces of wedding etiquette that has not loosened, and it is the near-universal position across the published guidance. A message is not a substitute, and neither is a printed card with a signature added.
What it does not require is expensive stationery, matching the wedding, or good handwriting. A plain card that arrived within three weeks reads better than a beautiful one that arrived in July.
The bridal shower cards themselves, and how many to buy
Buy the cards before the shower rather than after it. A stack of plain folded cards with envelopes sitting on a table is most of what makes the ninety minute version happen, and hunting for bridal shower thank you cards two weeks later is how the task slips into month two.
Buy about a quarter more than the guest list. Eighteen guests means about twenty-four cards, which covers the ones you start again, the people who sent something without coming, and the two you forgot were on the list. Cards are the cheapest line in this entire event and running out is the most annoying way to stall.
Plain is better than themed. Thank you cards that match the shower decorations date the note to an afternoon; a plain card is just a card, and the words are doing the work anyway. If you want them to match anything, match them to the wedding stationery, because you will be writing a second round of wedding thank you cards to many of the same people.
When the shower and the wedding collide
Bridal shower thank you notes usually fall due at the same time as the two weeks of wedding logistics, which is the real reason they slip. Put them in the calendar for a specific evening within two weeks of the shower rather than treating them as a thing to get to.
If they have already slipped badly, send them anyway and do not apologize at length. One clause acknowledging the delay, then the normal note. A late thank you note is welcome; a missing one is the thing people remember.
You are not writing eighteen letters. You are writing eighteen pairs of sentences inside a shape you settled once.

Eight bridal shower thank you wordings you can use as written
Swap the name and the first two sentences and leave the rest. Each is between thirty and sixty words, which is the length that reads as warm rather than dutiful. Dear plus the name is the right opening for all of them.
Use these
- A household giftDear Anna, thank you so much for the serving bowl. It is already on the shelf where it will live, and it is going on the table at the first proper dinner we host. It meant a great deal that you came on Saturday. Thank you again, from both of us.
- Something off the registryDear Marisol, thank you for the knife set. We had been putting off buying decent ones for about two years, so you have solved something we were quietly arguing about. Lovely to see you at the shower, and thank you again.
- A gift card or moneyDear Grandma Jean, thank you so much for your generosity. It is going toward the armchair we have been saving for, which means we will think of you every time we sit in it. Thank you for coming on Saturday, it would not have been the same without you.
- A guest who came without a giftDear Priya, thank you for coming on Saturday. You drove a long way for two hours in somebody else's living room, and having you there was the part of the day I will remember. Thank you, and see you very soon.
- A group giftDear Kelsey, thank you for the stand mixer, which I know you all went in on together. It is on the counter and it is not moving. Thank you for being there on Saturday, and for organizing everybody so quietly.
- A gift sent by somebody who could not comeDear Aunt Ruth, thank you so much for the linens. They are exactly right and we are keeping them for the new place. We missed you on Saturday and I am sorry the date did not work. Thank you again, and I hope to see you at the wedding.
- The hostDear Dana, thank you for Saturday. I know how much of it was you, from the food to the flowers to the fact that everybody knew where to sit. It was a lovely afternoon and none of it happened by accident. Thank you, properly.
- A note that is lateDear Nicole, thank you for the vase, and I am sorry this took so long to reach you. It has been on the windowsill since the shower and it is the first thing I see in the morning. Thank you for coming, and for being patient with me.

4
Sentences, and two of them repeat
Name the gift, say what you will do with it, then say the same two closing lines you said last time.
The structure is the entire trick. Two sentences change per guest and two do not, which turns eighteen letters into eighteen pairs of sentences and keeps the last card as warm as the first.

Bridal shower thank you notes, answered
The questions that come up once the shower is over.
How soon should bridal shower thank you notes be sent?
Within two to three weeks, while the shower is fresh and before the wedding becomes the priority.
If it has already been longer, send them anyway with one clause about the delay. A late note is welcome and a missing one is not.
What do you write in a bridal shower thank you card?
Four sentences: name the gift, say what you will do with it, say something about them being there, and close. Thirty to sixty words in total.
The specific detail about use is the part that makes it read as genuine. It matters more than any amount of enthusiasm.
How many bridal shower thank you cards should you buy?
About a quarter more than the guest list, so twenty-four cards for an eighteen guest shower. That covers restarts, the people who sent a gift without coming, and the ones you had forgotten.
Buy them before the shower rather than after. Having the cards already on the table is most of what makes the notes go out on time.
Do you need to thank guests who did not bring a gift?
Yes, and it is one of the nicer notes to write, because it is entirely about them rather than about an object.
The same applies to anybody who sent a gift without being able to come.
Should you thank the bridal shower host?
Yes. She is easy to miss because she is not on the gift list, so put her name on it.
Thank her for the afternoon rather than for a thing. A shower of eighteen costs a host about $340 as a Revelwick estimate, and hours of work.
Can you send a text instead of a bridal shower thank you note?
A handwritten card is the traditional and more personal choice, and a text can feel like a shortcut for a gift.
A plain handwritten card is fine. It does not need to be expensive or to match anything.
How do you thank somebody for money?
Name what it is going toward rather than the amount. Naming a figure is acceptable if it comes naturally to you, but the purpose always reads well and never reads awkwardly.
Avoid the word generous on its own with no detail attached, which is the money version of thanks for the lovely gift.
What if nobody wrote down who gave what at the bridal shower?
Ask the host and two guests separately, then reconcile the three lists. Between them they will usually recover everything, and photographs from the day fill most of the rest.
For anything still uncertain, write the note about them being there rather than guessing at an object. Guessing wrong is much worse than not naming it.
Do you write separate notes for a group gift?
One each, naming the gift in all of them, with a different middle sentence. Six identical notes read worse than six short ones.
If the group was very large, one note to the organizer plus a short line to each of the others is acceptable.
Do you still send a wedding thank you note to the same people?
Yes, if they give a wedding gift as well. They are separate gifts and separate occasions.
Two notes are fine, one for each gift.

07
Where this comes from
The etiquette, timings and structure are Revelwick's editorial advice.
What the figures are
Every cost on this page is a Revelwick editorial estimate for a bridal shower of about eighteen guests. It is a starting point for a budget conversation rather than a quote, and prices move, so check the current price before you book anything.
The etiquette
Handwritten notes, a note for everyone who attended or sent a gift, and thirty to sixty words are Revelwick's recommendations.
We suggest two to three weeks as a workable window for sending them.
What is ours
The ninety minute figure, the claim that writing them in one sitting is faster than in bursts, and the four sentence structure with two repeating lines are our framing rather than measured results.
Remembering to thank the host is the one thing on this page we would insist on.
